New skill center in Mbarara: a sewing workshop

The projects in Uganda, our youngest partner country, have been a huge success. The Adullam Primary School has only recently opened a new dormitory for 250 orphan boys and there is already a new upcoming project. As from May 2017, the green jungle of Mbarara will have a fully-equipped sewing workshop.

Why has Cunina started this project?

The sewing workshop in the school will serve as a skill center for 160 students, boys and girls, where they can build and improve their sewing skills.  In the future, they will be able to make money with these skills, as an employee or by creating their own small business. They will also be able to save money by repairing their own clothes.

At the skill center, they will learn what it is like to be the leader of their own business. Because next to the sewing workshop, there will be a small shop where the students can put up their work for sale. This teaches them to interact with clients and they can learn the basics of bookkeeping.

We work together with the local community and use local materials to support the local economy, create jobs and provide even more children with education.

Why does Cunina operate in Uganda?

Primary education in Uganda is basically free. The classrooms are packed with children and there are not enough teachers. The reason for this is that government subsidies are very limited, so teachers get a very low salary. Besides, going to school does cost money: all students are obliged to wear a school uniform and they need school supplies. 

Cunina works together with two partner schools in Fort Portal and Mbarara.
