CUNINA foster children
Khandbari lays appr. 160 km east of the Nepalese capital Kathmandu and is the centre of the Sankhuwa Sava district. The town is on the way to Makalu, the 5th highest mountain in the world (8.462 meter) and is regularly visited by hikers. Khanbari has a university campus which hosts almost 200 students. The individual foster care of CUNINA helps children from nearby mountain villages to receive a decent education. The monthly foster care contribution pays for the school enrolment fees and the boarding costs in the student homes. Most mountain villages are a several days' walk from Khandbari. Without the boarding facilities in one of the student hostels, the children of the villages would not be able to go to school.
In Kathmandu, the Nepalese CUNINA sister-NGO supports the Alpine Valley School since May 2007. Well-educated teachers were attracted to the school and are being paid a fair wage. Consequently, the level of education is of a higher standard than in the state schools. Additionally, all CUNINA foster children can now be monitored and the exchange of information will be much more efficient. Henceforth, the entire administration and management of the CUNINA fosterships in Kathmandu will be run from this school.
