CUNINA foster children

School children in Haiti

As soon as father Jan Hoet knows that a foster parenting has been assigned, he informs the child involved and its parents. In almost every case, the CUNINA foster children are going to school, but without foster care the average Haitian child would actually have little chance of a decent education and successful graduating.
Nevertheless it is a fact that in Haiti, a foster parenting is no longer sufficient to pay all school costs, especially for a high school student. That’s why it is necessary that the child’s parents make extra efforts to help pay for the education of their child.
Father Jan Hoet manages the CUNINA contributions in such a way that every child disposes of a current account where money can be taken from for school related purchases when necessary. As soon as the monthly contribution arrives, the money is put on each child’s account. At any given time, the child can check the balance and withdraw money, according to the CUNINA guidelines and in consultation with the child’s parents. The children are also encouraged to save up a little e.g. during school holidays, so they can dispose of some more money at the beginning of a new school year. It also happens that some children get an advance payment of their foster care money to be able to pay the high tuition fee in September.

For CUNINA it is now a priority to attract (an) extra local co-worker(s) as soon as possible, to be able to expand the individual foster care cases in Haiti.
