Cristiane from Belo Horizonte – Brazil - January 2005
“My name is Cristiane. I was born on the 4th of September 1993. My story begins like this: my mother divorced my real father and later she moved back in with him. After an argument with my father, when she was pregnant, she lay on the ground somewhere for a while until a truck passed by and gave her a ride. Thus she ended up with my uncle where she stayed. My aunt (my present adoptive mother) called together the whole family but everything ended in a row. My mother was sick for three days from all this commotion, went to the hospital but it was too soon for my birth. When afterwards the day of my birth arrived, my mother wanted to stay in the hospital because she had nowhere to go. The nurse got my aunt to get my mother out of the hospital. In the end my mother wanted to bring me to my biological father but he didn’t want me. After a while my mother told my aunt that she was going to see the world and that she just had to take care of me. After a while she suddenly turned up, wanted me back and threw my aunt in the river and took me to the town council. The council decided that I could stay with my aunt.
When I was 1 year old, I caught a severe flu. In hospital, complications occurred when they administered me serum. My one leg had to be amputated and on my other foot, I lost my toes. 6 months later, my adoptive father died and it was a hard life for my adoptive mother and me. I am alive but my leg is already buried. Now I am happy with my little artificial leg, a lot better than being without a leg. My dream is to have a bike.”
